Early life and background
Born Maria Halle Berry on August 14, 1966, in Cleveland, Ohio, she was named for Halle’s Department Store, a Cleveland landmark. Her mother, Judith Ann Hawkins, was a psychiatric nurse; her father, Jerome Jesse Berry, worked in a hospital psychiatric ward and later as a bus driver, dying in 2003. Her parents divorced when she was four, and her mother raised her and her older sister in Oakwood, Ohio. At five, her name was legally changed to Halle Maria Berry.
Berry graduated from Bedford High School as a cheerleader, honor student, school-newspaper editor, and prom queen, and later attended Cuyahoga Community College. She won Miss Teen All American in 1985 and Miss Ohio USA in 1986, finished first runner-up at Miss USA 1986, and became the first African-American to represent the United States at Miss World 1986, placing sixth.
Career
Early television and first films
Berry moved to New York in 1989 and was cast as Emily Franklin in the ABC sitcom Living Dolls. During taping she lapsed into a coma and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes; after the series was canceled she moved to Los Angeles and joined Knots Landing (1991) as Debbie Porter.
Her film debut came in Spike Lee’s Jungle Fever (1991), followed by a standout turn opposite Eddie Murphy in Boomerang (1992), the 1993 television adaptation of Alex Haley’s Queen, The Flintstones (1994), and Losing Isaiah (1995, opposite Jessica Lange). She earned her first ~$1 million salary for the action thriller Executive Decision (1996).
Breakthrough: Dorothy Dandridge, X-Men, and the Oscar
Berry co-produced and starred as the 1950s trailblazer in HBO’s Introducing Dorothy Dandridge (1999), winning a Primetime Emmy and a Golden Globe. In 2000 she debuted as Storm in X-Men, reprising the role in X2 (2003), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), and X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014).
Monster’s Ball (2001) changed everything. Her raw performance as grieving widow Leticia Musgrove won her the Academy Award for Best Actress in March 2002 — the first Black woman ever to take the category, a record she still holds alone. The same year she played Jinx Johnson opposite Pierce Brosnan in Die Another Day, followed by Gothika (2003).
Blockbusters, setbacks, and reinvention
Berry commanded one of the largest salaries of any actress of the era for Catwoman (2004) — reported between $12.5 million and $14 million — but the film flopped critically, and she famously accepted its Razzie for Worst Actress in person, holding her Oscar aloft. She then headlined Perfect Stranger (2007), Things We Lost in the Fire (2007), Frankie & Alice (2010, which earned her a Golden Globe nomination), The Call (2013), and the CBS series Extant (2014–2015).
In 2014 she launched her production company 606 Films, and she has continued to alternate leading roles with producing work: the assassin Sofia in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019), her directorial debut with the MMA drama Bruised (2020, TIFF premiere, Netflix release in 2021), Netflix’s The Union (2024) with Mark Wahlberg, the horror film Never Let Go (2024), and a main-competition jury seat at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.
Recent work
In 2026 Berry headlined the Amazon MGM crime thriller Crime 101 as insurance broker Sharon Colvin, alongside Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, and Barry Keoghan; it premiered in London in January 2026 and grossed roughly $72 million worldwide. She is also set to star in and produce the upcoming features Fleur and Red Card.
The Revlon partnership
Since 1996, Berry has been a global spokesmodel for Revlon, renewing the deal in 2004 — one of the longest-running celebrity endorsement deals in beauty, and a pillar of her brand for nearly three decades.

Personal life
Berry has been married three times: to baseball player David Justice (1993–1997), to singer Eric Benét (2001–2005), and to French actor Olivier Martinez (married July 2013, separated 2015, divorce finalized 2023, with shared custody of son Maceo). Since 2020 she has been in a relationship with Grammy-winning musician Van Hunt; the pair announced their engagement in February 2026. Her children are daughter Nahla, born in 2008 (with model Gabriel Aubry), and son Maceo, born in October 2013 (with Martinez).
Berry has spoken publicly about losing roughly 80% of the hearing in her left ear after being struck by an abusive former boyfriend during the filming of The Last Boy Scout (1991); she has never publicly named the man. In May 2000 she was involved in a hit-and-run in Los Angeles, pleaded no contest to leaving the scene, and received three years’ probation, a $13,500 fine, and community service.
Custody dispute (October 2026)
In October 2026 Berry is contesting a custody battle over her 13-year-old son Maceo. On October 1, Martinez filed for sole custody and a domestic violence restraining order, alleging a September 26 incident in which he said Berry physically abused the boy; a temporary order was granted, initially limiting Berry to daytime visits before being modified to preserve her decision-making authority over Maceo’s mental-health care and education. Berry denies the claims — “I have never physically, emotionally, or otherwise abused Maceo,” she said in a court declaration — and her attorney Marina Beck called Martinez’s filing “entirely meritless and deliberately misleading.” In an October 14 counter-filing, Berry asked the court for sole legal custody and accused Martinez of obstructing recommendations for Maceo’s education and mental-health care; her daughter Nahla submitted a declaration defending her mother. A hearing is scheduled for October 16, 2026, with Maceo cleared to testify on the restraining-order question.
