Early Life & Background
Born Naveen Kumar Gowda on 8 January 1986 in Bhuvanahalli village, Hassan district, Karnataka, Yash is the son of Arun Kumar, a KSRTC and later BMTC bus driver, and homemaker Pushpa; he has a younger sister, Nandini. He grew up in modest, lower-middle-class circumstances in Mysore, where he did his PUC at Mahajana Education Society (MES). As a teenager he moved to Bengaluru to act, joining the Benaka drama troupe founded by B. V. Karanth and doing theatre and backstage work before facing a camera. He told the Economic Times his parents taught him never to look down on anyone.
Career
Yash debuted in 2004 with the ETV Kannada serial Nanda Gokula, followed by Malebillu and Preeti Illada Mele (BookMyShow). His film debut came with Jambada Hudugi (2007); the breakthrough was Moggina Manasu (2008), which won him the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor (Kannada). His first lead film Rocky (2008) flopped, but Modalasala (2010) became his first blockbuster as a lead.
From 2011 to 2016 he stacked commercial hits — Rajadhani, Kirataka (2011), Drama (2012), Googly, Raja Huli (2013), Gajakesari, Mr. and Mrs. Ramachari (2014), Masterpiece (2015) and Santhu Straight Forward (2016). Mr. and Mrs. Ramachari grossed around ₹50 crore and won him the Filmfare Best Actor (Kannada); by 2013 the “Rocking Star” title had taken hold among fans, and he was widely described as one of the highest-paid actors of Kannada cinema.
K.G.F: Chapter 1 (2018) changed everything: the first Kannada film to cross the ₹100-crore and ₹200-crore marks, it grossed around ₹250 crore worldwide (Times of India), made him a pan-India star, and won him another Filmfare Best Actor (Kannada). K.G.F: Chapter 2, released 14 April 2022 in five languages and the first Kannada film in IMAX, crossed ₹1,200 crore worldwide (Bollywood Hungama), with trade estimates at ₹1,187–1,250 crore (Pinkvilla, Economic Times) — the highest-grossing Kannada film of all time.
After a four-year gap he returned with Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups (dir. Geetu Mohandas), co-written by Yash and co-produced by KVN Productions and his own Monster Mind Creations. Starring Kiara Advani, Nayanthara, Rukmini Vasanth, Tara Sutaria and Huma Qureshi, it released in cinemas on 26 August 2026 after delays (Filmfare Middle East). His next, Ramayana: Rise of a Legend, casts him as Ravana — and co-producer via Monster Mind Creations. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari (Prime Focus Studios, DNEG), it releases worldwide on 5 November 2026, with Part 2 slated for Diwali 2027. On 20 October 2026 (Dussehra) the makers opened advance bookings India-wide and unveiled the Ravana musical unit — “Rise of Asura” (Hindi), “Ravana Tandava” (Kannada), “Ravana Tandavam” (Tamil/Telugu) — with vocals by Vishal Dadlani, Anirudh Ravichander and G. V. Prakash Kumar (Box Office Worldwide). The Dussehra timing was deliberate — the festival marks Rama’s victory over Ravana — and the campaign spotlighted Yash’s antagonist (Box Office Worldwide).
He stars as Ravana opposite Ranbir Kapoor’s Lord Rama — for more on his co-star, read the Ranbir Kapoor biography.
