Early life and background
Arda Güler was born on 25 February 2005 in Altındağ, a working-class district of Ankara, Turkey, and began his organised football development in 2014 at the academy of Gençlerbirliği, where he spent five years. His technique and habit of playing with his head up quickly marked him out, and in February 2019, shortly before his 14th birthday, he joined the youth academy of Fenerbahçe, one of Turkey’s biggest clubs. He advanced through the club’s under-15, under-16 and under-19 levels, and on 13 January 2021, at just 15, he signed his first professional contract.
Career
Fenerbahçe (2021–2023)
Güler made his senior debut for Fenerbahçe in August 2021 at 16, coming on as a substitute against HJK Helsinki in a UEFA Europa League play-off tie, and days later debuted in the Süper Lig with an assist in a 2–0 win over Antalyaspor. He finished his debut season with three goals and three assists in only 255 minutes of playing time, performances that drew interest from Europe’s elite clubs including Arsenal, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain. In March 2022, Fenerbahçe extended his contract by three years.
The 2022–23 season was his breakout: he scored twice on opening day, netted his first European goal against Dynamo Kyiv, and produced a man-of-the-match performance in the Turkish Cup final against İstanbul Başakşehir as Fenerbahçe lifted the trophy. That summer he announced his departure on Instagram, ending his tenure with the Istanbul club.
Real Madrid (2023–present)
On 6 July 2023, Real Madrid announced the signing of Güler on a six-year contract until 2029, paying an initial €20 million plus up to €10 million in add-ons — at his own request, the club paid more than the release clause so that Fenerbahçe would benefit financially. His first months in Spain were devoured by injuries, but he finished his debut La Liga season with six goals and went on to pass 100 appearances for the club, with his 100th triggering another €2 million in add-ons in February 2026.
At international level, he became a sensation at Euro 2024 with a spectacular long-range strike against Georgia. Under coach José Mourinho, Güler has become one of Madrid’s most decisive players: on 14 October 2026 he came off the bench to deliver two assists in a dramatic 4–3 Champions League comeback at Roma, and in October 2026 Spanish outlet AS reported he had agreed a contract extension to 2031 — the club has not officially announced it. Mourinho has praised his vision, decision-making and influence: “For me, his playing quality is incredible… He’s a young man who has a great influence.”
