Early life and background
João Pedro Cavaco Cancelo was born on 27 May 1994 in Barreiro, Portugal, a working-class town on the south bank of the Tagus opposite Lisbon. He began playing at local club Barreirense before joining the Benfica academy in 2007, where he developed as an attacking right-back.
Tragedy struck when he was 18. In January 2013, his mother Filomena was killed in a car accident on the A2 motorway in Seixal while Cancelo and his brother Pedro were also in the vehicle; the brothers suffered only minor injuries. Cancelo later said he considered quitting football after her death, dedicating his career to her memory.
Career: the most travelled winner in Europe
Benfica, Valencia and Inter
Cancelo made his Benfica first-team debut on 25 January 2014 in the Taça da Liga and was part of the club’s 2013/14 domestic treble (Primeira Liga, Taça de Portugal and Taça da Liga). In August 2014 he moved to Valencia on loan, with the €15 million purchase option exercised in May 2015. After three seasons in Spain — including a 2017–18 loan at Inter Milan, where he was named in the Serie A Team of the Year — he was on the move again.
Juventus, Manchester City and Bayern
In 2018 Juventus signed him for a reported €40.4 million; he won Serie A and the Supercoppa Italiana in his single season in Turin. In the summer of 2019 he joined Manchester City for an initial €30 million (£27.4M), with Danilo moving to Juventus the other way.
At City, Cancelo became arguably the best-attacking full-back in world football, making 154 appearances and winning three Premier League titles (2020/21, 2021/22, 2022/23), the FA Cup (2022/23) and two League Cups. After falling out with Pep Guardiola in January 2023, he was loaned to Bayern Munich, where he added a Bundesliga winners’ medal — a fourth league title in a fifth season.
Barcelona, Al-Hilal and the permanent return
Cancelo first joined Barcelona on loan for the 2023/24 season, making 32 LaLiga appearances and two goals and winning over the Blaugrana faithful. In August 2024 he left City permanently, joining Saudi champions Al-Hilal for a reported €25 million ($28M) on a three-year deal.
His heart stayed in Catalonia. He returned to Barcelona on loan on 13 January 2026 and helped win La Liga 2025/26 (Barcelona’s 29th title, sealed with a 2-0 win over Real Madrid). Then came the final twist: on 20 August 2026, Barcelona announced his permanent signing on a free transfer after early contract termination with Al-Hilal — a three-year deal to June 2029, making him the first player ever to join Barça on loan twice before signing permanently. He wears the No. 2 shirt.
October 2026: the Galatasaray comeback
On 13 October 2026, Cancelo wrote his latest headline. With Barcelona trailing 1-0 to Galatasaray in Istanbul — Batrakov’s 28th-minute opener had silenced the hosts’ rivals — Cancelo struck the 43rd-minute equaliser off Dani Olmo’s assist, igniting a second-half blitz completed by Fermín López, Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi in a 4-1 Champions League comeback win.
Portugal: 77 caps and counting
Cancelo made his senior Portugal debut on 1 September 2016 against Gibraltar, playing the full 90 minutes and scoring the third goal in a 5-0 friendly win. He has since accumulated 77 caps and 14 goals (as of October 2026). His tournament record includes the 2019 UEFA Nations League title, withdrawing from Euro 2020 after a positive COVID-19 test, the 2022 World Cup, an assist against Turkey at Euro 2024, and the 2026 World Cup — where he played all five Portugal matches (316 minutes) until a round-of-16 exit to Spain.
Personal life
Cancelo has been with long-term partner Daniela Machado since 2011; the couple got engaged in 2021 and have two daughters. In December 2021 he was assaulted by four burglars at his Manchester home; jewellery was stolen and he suffered facial injuries resisting, but his family was unhurt. On Instagram at the time he wrote: “Unfortunately today I was assaulted by four cowards who hurt me and tried to hurt my family… The most important thing for me is my family and luckily they are all OK.”
